Six Common Mistakes in Guinea Pig Care
Many mistakes are made when handling guinea-pigs by visiting a store. By default, people assume that any and all products offered by a shop for a certain type of pet are safe and legit. Unfortunately, this is not the case. One of those products could be a leash designed for guinea-pigs. This is a bad idea. Cavies’ spines and bones are very delicate, so they may not be able to tolerate the stress caused by hamster wheel. Avoid at all costs.
Hamster Wheel is a similar product and mistake number two. Some people claim that this wheel also works with cavies. It’s a known fact that it does not work on cavies. The delicate spines and bones of guinea-pigs may be unable to withstand such stress.
By putting your pet in direct sunlight during a recent summer day you can get to number three. You will believe that it is important for him/her to be exposed to sunlight. Guinea pigs are not tolerant of high temperatures, and can suffer a heatstroke. They do prefer shade, after all they’re prey.
A single Guinea Pig could be mistake number four. The single guinea-pig may be cheaper, easier to control and less messy. But guinea-pigs are herd animals, and they need companionship.
Small Cage is amongst the most common mistakes. Here it is on number 5. Small cages do not allow for good air circulation and can lead to toxic gases escaping. The smaller cages will be messier and require more cleaning. They are also more unhealthy for the pet.
The sixth mistake is improper diet. This is one of the most dangerous. Your cavy is at risk if you give them human food, dairy products or the wrong vegetables. The seeds are also a mistake because they contain a lot of empty calories and have no nutritional value. They can also be choking hazards. It is important to learn about guinea-pig food preferences before you get a guinea-pig as a pet.
